Sefko: With Testosterone Acetate for first time this season, Mavs don't let Lakers up off mat in 103-93 win

LOS ANGELES --  For the first time, the Mavericks had their preferred starting lineup on the floor for tipoff Sunday against the Lakers.

Four-plus minutes later, they had a 15-0 lead.

It won't always look this good. But the early returns after Chandler Parsons made his season debut and the backcourt of Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews returned after missing the second game of the season were easy on the eyes.

The Mavericks never let the Lakers off the mat, pulling away in the third quarter and eventually settling for a 103-93 victory at Staples Center to complete a 2-1 season-opening road trip. It was the longest trip to start a season in franchise history.

The victory was the 340th of Rick Carlisle's tenure, pushing him past Don Nelson as the winningest coach in franchise history.

"Nellie's one of the greatest coaches ever," Carlisle said. "In his honor, I'm going to crack open a beer and drink one to him because he's one of the all-time greats and he's a friend."

Turning serious, Carlisle put credit where he believes it is deserved.

"There are many people to thank for being in this position," he said. "But the two main ones, I gave big hugs in the locker room. And that's Mark Cuban and Dirk Nowitzki. A guy doesn't get in this position unless you have a great owner and one of the all-time great franchise players. So I'm very blessed."

Nowitzki looked like he turned back the clock 10 years, hitting nine of his first 10 shots and finishing with 25 points and nine rebounds. He got great help from Zaza Pachulia with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mavericks also saw Williams return from a knee problem to post 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

"It's a heck of a road trip for us," Nowitzki said. "I felt great after a couple of days off."

The return of Parsons, who had knee surgery on May 1, was another milepost in the Mavericks' long journey toward getting everybody healthy.

He only played 11 minutes in the first half, which was the way his return was planned. His minutes will gradually increase, Carlisle said, but he'll be on restrictions for some time. Parsons made just one of six shots, but had three rebounds and three assists.

"It's been pretty much seven months since I've played, so it's going to be a process," Parsons said. "But I felt good. It's been a long time coming, a lot of countless hours of rehab. You're going to be a little rusty and a step slow. It's going to take some time, but the good thing is my knee felt good. So exciting. It's awesome just to be out there.

"I'm going to butt heads on letting me play more. But that's not happening. I'll be responsible with it."

Expect that time to rise gradually during the upcoming three-game home stand.

In addition, Williams and Matthews both looked sharp at times in their time on the court. Both had missed Thursday's game against the Clippers and the Mavericks felt the impact as they were blown out in the second half.

It looked a lot different with both players contributing against the Lakers.

Raymond Felton had a critical basket when he hit a jumper after the Lakers had crept within 97-91 late in the fourth quarter. That sealed the win.

The game was unique in that it is the first time in league history that one team has had a 20-year veteran, Kobe Bryant, and the other an 18-year vet, Nowitzki, both of whom have never played for another franchise.

"They're old," owner Mark Cuban deadpanned when asked what that meant. Turning serious, he said: "Dirk and Kobe are a testament to discipline. I don't care what business you're in, you don't excel in any industry without being disciplined - and without having a focus on greatness. And both of these guys exemplify that."

The night went a lot more smoothly for Nowitzki, who hit his first six shots from the field. Bryant missed all six of his shots in the first half.

It was that kind of night for the Lakers, who trailed by 17 going into the fourth quarter after having crept within seven at one point.

To that point, the Lakers had shot just 21-of-64 (32.8 percent).
