From Tamoxifen Citrate to Exemestane, Breast Cancer Month Events
Kent Hospital, with the Rhode Island Department of Health Women's Cancer Screening Program, will provide free breast health exams for women 40 and older who do not have insurance, or whose insurance does not cover breast health screenings. Women whose income is below the program guidelines also qualify. A mammogram and clinical exam will be performed at the Breast Health Center at Kent. All participants must be Rhode Island residents. Appointments can be scheduled starting in October by calling 736-1988.


A screening of "Decoding Annie Parker," a film about a breast-cancer patient and a cancer researcher whose lives intersect in a groundbreaking study, is Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Seekonk Showcase Cinemas, 100 Commerce Way, Route 6, Seekonk. Those who are BRCA+ or contemplating being tested are welcome to see the film and participate in a Q&A with genetic counselors and representatives for plastic and breast surgery. Tickets can be purchased online for $10 or at the door for $12. The film is presented by My Destiny Foundation, a nationwide nonprofit organization providing financial support to those who are at risk of developing breast cancer. 339-2885; mydestiny-us.com.


Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation's 10th Anniversary Flames of Hope Celebration takes place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4, in downtown Providence. A free healthy living expo will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Renaissance Providence Hotel and Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Avenue of the Arts, and will feature more than 30 cancer-specific/healthy living vendors, cooking demonstrations, interactive health activities, a survivors' lounge, a bookstore, information and resources and nationally recognized speakers including Geralyn Lucas, a survivor and author of "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy." A family-oriented Celebration Village will be at Station Park (across from the Providence Place mall) Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight and will include several pavilions including the garden of hope, healing arts activities, a movie theater, resources and shopping, as well as a free live concert by '80s tribute band Decadia.

At sundown, the Illuminations of Life: Hope Torch Procession begins with a performance by the State Ballet of Rhode Island. The procession features 150 torchbearers who will line up at the State House and proceed to the Providence River Basin to light the WaterFire. Afterwards, the ticketed Pink Party will take place, offering food stations from Trattoria Romana, pink cake provided by Gregg's Restaurants, a cash bar, music and dancing. A board breaking for breast cancer demonstration will be presented by Mastery Martial Arts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, The Flames of Hope Run/Walk Series gets under way at Station Park with onsite registration and packet pick-up at 8 a.m. The Pink Pump Palooza, a 50-yard dash in high heels open to both men and women, has multiple start times beginning at 9 a.m. The Kids Fun Run also has multiples start times beginning at 10 a.m. and the Gloria Gemma 5K begins at 11:15 a.m. An awards ceremony is set for noon.

 

The 2nd annual Twin Peaks Preservation Stroll, a 5K walk/stroll to support breast cancer, will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at The Rathskeller, Old Coach Road, Charlestown. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. A donation of $50 or more will put your name on the sponsor board the day of the walk. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
