Exemestane, CAS107868-30-4: European Food Regulator's Assessment Of Glyphosate Finds Herbicide 'unlikely To Cause Cancer'

Exemestane, CAS 107868-30-4European food regulator's assessment of glyphosate finds herbicide 'unlikely to cause cancer'

A controversial report from the EU's food safety regulatory has cleared the way for the relicensing of the herbicide glyphosate across member countries.

The report's key finding, that glyphosate is 'unlikely to cause cancer' stands in opposition to recent findings from the United Nations' World Health Organisation.

Glyophosate is the active ingredient in the popular weed killer RoundUp, which now has many generic, off-patent, versions.

It is used widely by Australian broadacre farmers, as well as domestic gardeners to kill weeds.

Earlier this year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer came to an opposing conclusion, saying it was likely to cause cancer.

The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) released its finding on Thursday, with environmental groups and farm lobbies already reacting strongly to its conclusion.

The report means glyphosate is now likely to be relicensed in Europe for another 10 years, but for the first time the EFSA recommended setting limits on exposure.

EFSA recommends that limit to be set at 0.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

In a statement, environmental group Greenpeace called the findings a 'whitewash', and criticised some of the studies included in the report.

But agribusiness and biotechnology company Monsanto, which developed the herbicide, has welcomed the finding, and stated the company has always backed the safety of its products.
