Exemestane, 107868-30-4 Helps Breast Cancer Survivors Turn Holmes Lake Pink

Exemestane, 107868-30-4 helps breast cancer survivors turn Holmes Lake pink

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants converge at the starting line just minutes before the walking portion of the event begins Sunday at Holmes Lake in Lincoln.

When doctors diagnosed his wife, it felt like a punch to the gut.

At least, that’s how Larry Geiger remembers feeling when told his wife had early-stage breast cancer.

He’s always considered himself the protector of his family, which includes himself and his wife, along with three daughters, three sons-in-law and now seven grandchildren. But despite the wall of security he felt the family had, he couldn’t stop breast cancer.

“It felt like a sneak attack,” Larry said.

The news came six years ago, and it hurt the whole family, but it was never bleak. Larry said that as soon as the shock wore off, the prevailing mood was vigilance.

“I knew she’d be fine,” Larry said. “There wasn’t even 10 seconds of woe or complaining. She just said, ‘We’re going to fight this.’”

That attitude was omnipresent Sunday afternoon at Holmes Lake where about 5,000 came to support the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink, donating money and walking the path around the lake.

The American Cancer Society event is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. It has taken place at Holmes Lake for the past 15 years. Every October during breast cancer awareness month, it brings together a wide variety of people under one purpose.

And, more specifically, one color.

There were pink-shirted cheerleaders with pink pom-poms, dogs with pink feather boas, collars and handkerchiefs, and even a pink Dodge pickup hauling a Ranger Z-521 fishing boat -- also pink. Activities, including Zumba and a decorated bra contest, took place before the run.

Event manager Erinn Drouin said the event is held to honor survivors, caregivers and those who didn’t finish the fight.

“We’re celebrating them,” she said. “They’re truly the reason that we’re here.”

Another key motive is to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

In past years, Lincoln’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event broke the $200,000 mark. Droulin said that was their goal coming in to the event on Sunday.

But for many the drive to raise funds doesn’t stop here.

After five years of remission, Larry and Diane decided they wanted to put more into the fight against breast cancer. They started thinking of new ways to raise money and came up with Pedaling for Pink, and Bras for a Cause.

This year they had their second annual Pedaling for Pink, which they described as a sort of game-day bar crawl for charity, and raised over $1,000.

In the process they also founded their own non-profit: Heartland Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. Their main motive is to provide financial support to uninsured or underinsured women who need 3D mammograms as well as contributing to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and providing post-mastectomy product education.

But whatever section of breast cancer research their fundraising dollars go to, everyone agrees they’re seeing progress against breast cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer deaths have decreased from about 332,000 in 1989 to 213,000 in 2012.

However, the fight isn’t over as millions of people live with and die because of breast cancer. That’s what motivates people like Larry and Diane.

“We’re not in this for the glory,” Larry said. “We just want to help make a difference in people’s lives.”
